“BACH BEGETS BEBOP” BENEFIT CONCERT BY TWO WORLD-FAMOUS ARTISTS
We are pleased to announce a new collaboration featuring the world-renown American jazz baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan of Hastings-on-Hudson and Amherst, MA and the highly acclaimed Dutch classical baritone saxophonist Henk van Twillert. The duo will be performing a benefit concert in Hastings-on-Hudson in advance of their summer European tour called “The Bach Late Night Show.” This project is both exciting and innovative and the concept is fresh and daring in that it merges two seemingly divergent languages into a new form of musical expression.
Van Twillert, whose Bach on the saxophone has been called “a real discovery,” will perform the Bach Unaccompanied Cello Suites while Smulyan, the 2008 Down Beat Critic’s Poll winner for baritone saxophone, improvises, using the suites as a springboard. The result is a fascinating new counterpoint with the boundaries of both traditions being stretched. Bach is universally recognized as the first improviser and jazz musicians have long been attracted to his music for his sense of harmony, line, and melodic development. This is the first time a project of this nature has been presented and the combining of these two forms is a natural fit. The results should provide a thrilling musical experience for both the performers and listeners.
