DESCRIPTION

Curriculum Tjako van Schie Tjako van Schie (1961), born in Coevorden, in the Netherlands, received his musical education from Ben Smits at the Conservatory of Zwolle. After his studies he followed several masterclasses including Weimar, Germany, where he had lessons with Jacob Lateiner and Detlef Kraus. As a soloist he played in Europe, China and Canada. Nowadays Van Schie works as a performing pianist, composer, arranger, teacher and coach at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and guest teacher at the Superior School of Music, Porto, Portugal. The last decades he performed and recorded several remarkable programs. Among others the Goldberg Variations of Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the highlights. The recording Water, Source of Life includes works of Felix Mendelsohn, Edward Grieg and 4 compositions of Tjako van Schie. Together with the Dutch violinist Adriaan Stoet Van Schie recorded the CD Yiddish Music From Ghetto’s & Concentration Camps. The live recording Die Geigen, Ja Geigen includes compositions of George Friedrich Handel, Edward Elgar, Jules Massenet and last but not least Fado Olandesa of Van Schie. As a composer several of his works have been performed by international renowned musicians. As an arranger Tjako van Schie did Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto for Saxophone Orchestra and Piano. As a soloist he performed the concerto at the first international Clarinet and Saxophone festival 2010 in Caracas, Venezuela, a festival where several compositions by Tjako van Schie got their premiere. His expressive play and modest personality give him the freedom of not focusing on mere virtuosity, but aiming for the essence. Tjako is very able to prove his point that there’s no life without music and also loves to teach music. For this he has worked with several known musicians from all over the world. For the past 25 years he closely collaborated with saxophonist Henk van Twillert, as well in his saxophone classes, concerts and festivals.

The series Meet the Artists 2015 opens with the expressive and lyrical soprano Ines Soares from Portugal with Henk van Twillert on his beloved baritone saxophone and tasteful accompaniment of Tjako van Schie at the piano. You will experience unforgettable moments. About Ines Soares: Inês Soares, 1980 initiated her musical studies at the age of 6. She get the superior degree in singing course at ESMAE - ‘Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo’, in Porto. In London, Inês Soares regularly attends singing lessons with Professor Robert Bicknell and dancing classes at the Pineapple Dance Studios, currently she takes singing lessons with Prof. Gabriella Moraga. Inês Soares is part of a theatre company directed by Ruben Marks where she interpreted the role of Maria Callas in the play ‘As Sete Mulheres’. She interpreted the roles of Maria Madalena and Nala in the musicals ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and ‘Lions King’. She also played the part of Madame Jeneveuve Marseille in the musical ‘Scents of Light’ with the worldwide debut at the ‘Teatro Helena Sá e Costa’. Inês regularly works with ‘Cinemágica’ singing the Portuguese versions of Disney Films. A documentary on a French channel called ARTE, talked about Portuguese cultures and traditions Inês decided to participate, by singing one of the most famous Portuguese music styles, ‘O Fado’. She interpreted the role of Mabel in the musical ‘Fame’ and Joanne in the musical ‘Rent’ She was invited to appear on the magazine ‘Já viram isto’ as a ‘Fadista’, and was invited by Zé Raposo and Maria João Abreu. In Filipe Lá Feria’s productions she participated in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, interpreted the ‘Mulher no Deserto’ in the musical ‘O Principezinho’, Irmã Margarida in ‘Música no Coração’, Frumma Sarah in ‘Um Violino no Telhado’ and Lebre de Março in ‘Alice no país das Maravilhas’. In April 2011 she interpreted the role of Marcelina in ‘Bodas de Fígaro’ by Mozart, together with the ‘Orquestra do Norte’, at the ‘Coliseu do Porto’. Inês was one of the guest artists to the ‘Tenos Giovanni D’Amore’, participating on the 22nd of May 2012 alongside other guest artists such as Tozé from the film ‘Perfume’. She was invited by the saxophonist Henk Van Twillert to participate in his last recorded CD ‘A bag of Music’, to do the “Tour d’Azul” in the Netherlands Antilles and to participate in several concerts. The successful saxophone ensemble Vento do Norte from Portugal is again programmed to take you to distant corners of the world. This time, jazz pianist John Austria from New York will join them to play their new program “New York”. Henk van Twillert will join them in a unique way and will be your experienced guide in this travel to New York. About Vento do Norte: Vento do Norte is a unique ensemble of young and talented musicians who combine a modern vision of chamber music with compelling interpretations. The group plays unique adaptations of Bach, Beethoven and Mendelssohn, transforms melancholic Fado music, stirs up rousing tangos by Piazzolla, and enriches the laden soul of James Brown, all played from memory. The group is a musical revelation - a rapturous experience that touches the soul one minute, and brings the house down the next. The group was formed in 2005 by Henk van Twillert, internationally renowned saxophonist professor at the College for Music and Performing Arts in Porto, Portugal – ESMAE (Escola Superior de Música e das Artes do Espectáculo). The ensemble is based in Portugal, from where it is rapidly conquering the world: from festivals and theatres in Southern Europe to stages in Caracas, Venezuela and Dutch Antilles. In early 2007, the group was invited to play a series of concerts in Brussels and Antwerp to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the European Union. It also performed on the Liberation Day celebrations in Amsterdam. The highly talented musicians won many international competitions. As from time to time there a change of elements the group they continue young and powerful and enthusiastic. In 2009 they produced their first CD "Adagio for Saxophones". In 2011, “Henk van Twillert & Vento do Norte” were on tour in Dutch Antilles, Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire and they played several classic concerts, school concerts and on the opening night from the Bonaire Heineken Jazz Festival. In 2013 and 2014 played in several concerts in Holland. In Portugal they play in several school concerts, festivals concerts, and theaters. About John Austria: John Austria is a jazz pianist who has been performing and teaching professionally in New York City for over ten years. He performs regularly with the Sonny Simmons Quintet, Michael Marcus Quintet, and Makane Kouyate’s West African/Jazz fusion ensemble “Denbaya”. John also runs a weekly jam session at “Boom” restaurant in Soho. He has been teaching with the New York Jazz Workshop for over a year now, and has also taught at the non-profit music school Upbeat NYC for several years. Born and raised in NYC, John had the good fortune to learn jazz as it has been passed down from generation to generation in an oral tradition. Studying under the mentorship of the great jazz pianist Mike Longo, John absorbed the musical knowledge Mike had learned playing with musicians such as Cannonball Adderley, Roy Eldridge, Paul Chambers, and Dizzy Gillespie (in whose band Longo was the pianist and musical director for over 15 years). Alongside his studies with Longo, John also performed with the semi-professional Laguardia High School Big Band, under the direction of Bob Stewart. Stewart, one of the great tuba players in jazz history, passed on his years of experience playing with Charles Mingus, Gil Evans, David Murray, Taj Mahal, and Freddie Hubbard, among many others. In this ensemble, John performed with Branford Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Gary Smulyan, Ray Barretto, Wynton Marsalis, and Randy Brecker. John received his Bachelor’s degree in music from The City College of New York, with a focus in music theory.
